The teen driver drove across the lawns of businesses, the lawns of residential homes, struck multiple mailboxes, and drove through two ditches. Eventually, the driver went down Judge Street and crashed into the Clinton River. The teen then got out of his car and started swimming in the river in order to avoid arrest. Police said that the teen tried to hide along the shore, but eventually was located by deputies who used a taser in order to take the teen into custody.

The teen is facing criminal charges of larceny in a building, possession of marijuana, felonious assault, unlawfully driving an auto, fleeing and eluding, and resisting and obstructing arrest. The case is set to be prosecuted in Macomb County Juvenile Court. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. According to the CDC and Prevention, in 2011, about 2,650 teens in the U.S. ages 16-19 were killed and in addition to this, almost 292,000 were sent to hospital emergency departments for injuries suffered. This means that on average, every day, seven teens ages 19 to 19 died from a car accident.
